Voluntary Car Driver
Green Community Travel Ltd
Using own car to transport our passengers to their hospital appointments. Expenses are reimbursed.
Our volunteers use their own vehicles to take passengers and generally wait for up to an hour and a half or we drop them off and return for them later in the day. We have volunteers that drive our vehicles so we can accommodate different mobility needs e.g those that travel in wheelchairs. Mileage expenses are reimbursed directly from the passengers and we arrange a DBS and training for those volunteers that drive our vehicles. We are committed to make volunteering work around our volunteer’s life so do not ask for a minimum amount of hours/journeys a month.
Driving (must have full driving license)
Basic IT skills - internet & email, Organising & Planning, UK Driving Licence
Volunteers must have a driving licence and have a car that is of a safe and clean standard to transport passengers in. Driving experience will be discussed as well as any penalties and the nature of them. Someone that enjoys driving is a benefit, we are seeking people that like meeting new people and enjoy talking with people. Many of our passengers live alone so conversation is a big and important part of the journey. We are seeking volunteers who are kind and considerate and wish to help people at sometimes very difficult times in their lives.
Our passengers cannot attend their appointments another way so you would be getting them to very important appointments and being a life line for them. Many of our passengers live alone and having a conversation along the way is an important part of the journey, many of our volunteers say how interesting the passengers are and enjoy hearing their stories. You will be making a real difference, sometimes at a very difficult time in people's lives. It is also hugely beneficial to other services such as the NHS. Sometimes we also take people to weddings, funerals, visiting etc so it can be quite a varied role.
Generally bookings take around 3-4 hours at a minimum, an hour to the appointment, an hour at the appointment and an hour to return passengers home. Some bookings take longer and would be a double journey so passengers would be dropped off and collected later. Meaning the time in the middle is free. Most bookings are Monday-Friday but we do have requests for weekend transport but this is less frequent
