Befriender

Age UK South Gloucestershire

Providing companionship to someone who is suffering from loneliness or isolation.

Detailed Description

We offer a befriending service to people over 50, who feel lonely & isolated, and in need of a friendly person to come and visit them. This could involve having a cup of tea and a chat, taking part in a hobby together e.g. puzzles, craft or watching sport. By volunteering regularly it can make a huge difference to someone's life and help alleviate the feelings of loneliness. You would be matched with an individual in your local area, and the meetings can be arranged around your existing commitments. No experience is necessary - full training and support will be provided.

No specific skills needed, other than being friendly and confident in meeting new people.

What is in it for you

Many of our volunteers get great satisfaction from knowing that they have brightened their client's day as they may be the only person that they will see. They also build strong friendships which last for years. Our volunteers gain confidence in working with people and learn about confidentiality and safeguarding which may also be useful in their working life. We are able to pay travel expenses and references if required.

Time Commitment

1 hour per week. We ask for a long term commitment (min. 6 months)

Visiting would take place in the clients home or out in the local community if the client is able to. We have clients waiting for a befriender across the whole of South Gloucestershire and volunteers are matched to a client in a location convenient to them.
